1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commending Waite Park Police Chief David Bentrud for his many years of dedicated
1.3service in law enforcement.
1.4WHEREAS, Wait Park Police Chief David Bentrud is retiring after over 32 years of dedicated
1.5service in law enforcement; and
1.6WHEREAS, Chief Bentrud earned a bachelor's in criminal justice from the University of
1.7St. Thomas and a master's in criminal justice from St. Cloud State University. He also completed
1.8studies at the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and the Command and Minnesota
1.9Chiefs Advanced CLEO and Command Academy; and
1.10WHEREAS, prior to his role as Waite Park police chief, David served as a patrol supervisor
1.11for the St. Cloud Police Department starting in 1992. He also served as a school resource officer,
1.12a field training officer and coordinator, a St. Cloud Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team
1.13member, and sergeant; and
1.14WHEREAS, David was hired as Waite Park police chief in 2008. In addition to his role as
1.15police chief, David also served as the city's emergency manager, board member and president of
1.16the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, board member of the Peace Officer Standards and
1.17Training Board, board member of the Association of Training Officers of Minnesota, and member
1.18of numerous other organizations. David taught criminal justice courses as an adjunct faculty instructor
1.19at St. Cloud University from 1996 to 2018; and
1.20WHEREAS, David is also active in the community through his work with Central MN Youth
1.21for Christ, Discovery Church, the St. Cloud Rotary Club, Terebinth Refuge, and serving as chaplain
1.22with Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He is also a member of the Stearns County Planning
1.23Commission; and
1.24WHEREAS, during his tenure as police chief, David has seen the department grow from 12
1.25to 22 officers and helped facilitate collaborations between the police department and organizations
2.1like CentraCare and county human services to combat sex trafficking and better respond to mental
2.2health crises in the area; and
2.3WHEREAS, David retired on May 15, 2023, after over 32 years of dedicated service in law
2.4enforcement and is looking forward to spending more time with his family. His leadership and
2.5sense of community will be missed by the Waite Park Police Department; and
2.6NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.7thanks Police Chief David Bentrud for his many years of outstanding service in law enforcement
2.8and extends best wishes to him in his retirement.
2.9BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.10enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.11Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to David Bentrud.
