1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
1.3WHEREAS, in a world torn by the violence of wars, racism, economic exploitation,
1.4xenophobia, and various forms of discrimination, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known
1.5as Mahatma "the Great Soul" Gandhi, rose to challenge the norm; and
1.6WHEREAS, the cardinal principle that guided Mahatma Gandhi's life was Ahimsa
1.7(nonviolence); and
1.8WHEREAS, Ahimsa means that we must not hurt or injure anyone through our actions,
1.9speech, or even in our thoughts; and
1.10WHEREAS, his life and teachings have inspired leaders like Martin Luther King, Nelson
1.11Mandela, and many others all over the world; and
1.12WHEREAS, Ahimsa also means that we must resolve our disputes by nonviolent methods;
1.13and
1.14WHEREAS, we must treat everyone with love, empathy, compassion, and respect; and
1.15WHEREAS, today, October 2, we continue to celebrate and remember his legacy by honoring
1.16his birth anniversary, bringing an awareness of these noble principles to restore and change our
1.17communities, and to promote peace among all people no matter what their background, race, color,
1.18faith, or class; and
1.19WHEREAS, the United Nations has declared October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence;
1.20and
1.21WHEREAS, Mahatma Gandhi said, "Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of
1.22mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.";
1.23and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2honors the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
