1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring John T. Peterson.
1.3WHEREAS, John T. Peterson has resided in Wright County for all but the first three years
1.4of his life, and his family has deep roots there, with John M. Peterson and Erick Kelstrum (John's
1.5great-grandfathers on both his father's and mother's sides) having homesteaded family farms north
1.6of Waverly, in Marysville Township, in the 1870s; today, John co-owns the Peterson farm, along
1.7with his younger brother, Wallace H. Peterson, Jr.; and
1.8WHEREAS, John graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville in 1985 and the
1.9William Mitchell College of Law in 1988, before being admitted to the Minnesota State Bar and
1.10the Federal Bar that same year; and
1.11WHEREAS, upon receiving his juris doctorate, John entered active duty as a Judge Advocate
1.12in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving on active duty until June 1992; upon completion of active service,
1.13John continued his service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, where he presently holds the rank of
1.14Lieutenant Colonel; and
1.15WHEREAS, in summer 2008, John was recalled to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi
1.16Freedom, serving with the 3rd Marine Air Wing in Al Asad, Iraq until February 2009; and
1.17WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Peterson was recognized for meritorious service while
1.18serving as Senior Assessment Officer within the Force Readiness Assessment and Assistance
1.19Program (FRAAP) Mobilization Training Unit (MTU), Mobilization Command, Marine Forces
1.20Reserve (MARFORRES), New Orleans, Louisiana, from April 1, 2009, to February 1, 2017; during
1.21this period, John performed his demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner,
1.22and throughout his tenure, he distinguished himself as a highly respected and effective leader with
1.23superior communication, organizational, and fiscal skills; and
2.1WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Peterson successfully guided the FRAAP assessments for
2.2over 53 SMCR units from throughout the Reserve Force, providing invaluable feedback to
2.3COMMARFORRES and valuable instruction and training to assessed units, which contributed to
2.4COMMARFORRES' capability as a force provider for the Global War on Terrorism; after 35 years
2.5of honorable and dedicated service, in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps,
2.6Lieutenant Colonel Peterson has decided to retire; and
2.7NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.8congratulates Lieutenant Colonel John T. Peterson on his years of outstanding service as a member
2.9of the United States armed services and to this nation and extends best wishes to him in his
2.10retirement.
2.11BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.12enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.13Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to John T. Peterson.
