1.1A Senate resolution
1.2condemning violence and violent rhetoric directed at our United States Capitol and
1.3state capitols, and affirming support for democracy, rule of law, and the certified results
1.4of Minnesota's election and the elections of the other states.
1.5WHEREAS, on January 6, 2021, an armed mob breached the United States Capitol,
1.6endangering the safety of Members of Congress, law enforcement, and staff; and
1.7WHEREAS, the mob damaged property in the United States Capitol and forced Members
1.8of Congress to evacuate, many wearing gas masks; and
1.9WHEREAS, Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick was killed; and
1.10WHEREAS, members of the mob breached and attempted to breach the chambers of the
1.11United States Senate and United States House of Representatives, minutes after Members of Congress
1.12evacuated; and
1.13WHEREAS, pursuant to the 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution, the United
1.14States Congress was gathering in joint session to certify the Electoral College results; and
1.15WHEREAS, the Electoral College has cast 306 electoral votes for Joe Biden to 232 electoral
1.16votes for President Donald Trump; and
1.17WHEREAS, the electoral ballots had to be physically carried out of the chamber to prevent
1.18them from being damaged by the mob; and
1.19WHEREAS, Minnesota's electoral votes had not yet been certified when Congress was forced
1.20to flee; and
1.21WHEREAS, public officials around the nation have made troubling statements that led to
1.22Americans questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election; and
1.23WHEREAS, efforts to thwart the will of Minnesota voters are undemocratic; and
2.1WHEREAS, attempts to block certification of Minnesota's election results have been rejected
2.2by the courts; and
2.3WHEREAS, precautionary measures were required for the Minnesota State Capitol, including
2.4mobilizing law enforcement; NOW, THEREFORE,
2.5BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it unequivocally condemns
2.6violence directed at the United States Capitol and at state capitols.
2.7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that those who participated in the criminal destruction of
2.8property and assaults on our law enforcement officials at the United States Capitol should be arrested
2.9and prosecuted.
2.10BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Senate of the State of Minnesota stands behind the
2.11will of Minnesota voters and supports the full certification of its electoral college votes by the
2.12United States Congress.
2.13BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Senate of the State of Minnesota condemns attacks
2.14on our democracy.
2.15BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Senate of the State of Minnesota reaffirms our
2.16commitment to democracy, free and fair elections, and the rule of law.
