1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring 2014 Farm Family Joe and Colleen Carlson of Winsted
1.3WHEREAS, family farms form the foundation of Minnesota agriculture, propel
1.4Minnesota's economy, and maintain the vitality of Minnesota's rural communities; and
1.5WHEREAS, the University of Minnesota is proud to annually recognize families from
1.6throughout the state who exemplify the contributions of family farms to the prosperity of our
1.7state; and
1.8WHEREAS, in 1985, while Joe Carlson worked in Oregon, he and Colleen planted the
1.9first of their apple trees on their Stockholm Township farm; and
1.10WHEREAS, in 1994, with 4,000 trees bearing fruit, they converted the 60 year-old barn on
1.11their land into a bakery and restaurant using equipment and supplies secured at auctions; and
1.12WHEREAS, 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of "The Barn," where the Carlsons and their
1.13employees provide customers with "farm-to-table" culinary experiences truly representative of
1.14Minnesota's agricultural enterprise; and
1.15WHEREAS, the Carlsons will be honored at the annual Farmfest event on August 7,
1.16along with 73 other 2014 Farm Families; and
1.17NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.18it recognizes Joe and Colleen Carlson of Winsted for their dedication and innovation in family
1.19farming and entrepreneurship.
1.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.21enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair
1.22of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Joe and Colleen Carlson.
