1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commemorating Nigeria's Independence Day.
1.3WHEREAS, in the mid-1850s Nigeria became a colony of Great Britain; and
1.4WHEREAS, by 1901, the British government had taken control of the Royal Niger Company's
1.5Nigerian territories while Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria, became a British protectorate; and
1.6WHEREAS, the colonization of Nigeria lasted for over 100 years, during which the British
1.7government took full advantage of Nigeria's natural resources until after World War II when an
1.8independence movement for a free Nigeria arose; and
1.9WHEREAS, after a long struggle, Nigeria was granted full independence from Great Britain
1.10on October 1, 1960; and
1.11WHEREAS, after independence, Nigeria endured many civil wars between the northern,
1.12eastern, and western regions of the county, but the country's natural resources, especially the booming
1.13petroleum trade industry, helped Nigeria flourish and advance financially after gaining independence;
1.14and
1.15NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.16commemorates and celebrates October 1 as Nigeria's Independence Day.
