A bill for an act
relating to education; creating model curriculum for mental health; proposing
coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 120B.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

[120B.21] MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION.

The legislature encourages districts to provide instruction in mental health for
students in grades 7 through 12. Instruction must be aligned with local health and physical
education standards and integrated into a district's existing programs, curriculum, or the
general school environment. The commissioner of education, in consultation with mental
health organizations, shall provide assistance to districts including:

(1) age-appropriate model learning activities for grades 7 through 12 that address
mental health components of the National Health Education Standards and the benchmarks
developed by the department's quality teaching network in health and physical education,
and best practices in mental health education; and

(2) a directory of resources for planning and implementing age-appropriate mental
health curriculum and instruction in grades 7 through 12.
