A bill for an act
relating to education; integrating American Indian views on the environment and
ecology into statewide curriculum; appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

new text begin The sum indicated in this section is
appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner of education for the fiscal year
designated.

new text begin American Indian environmental and ecology curriculum. new text end

new text begin (a) For the
commissioner of education to develop materials that may be integrated into curriculum that
embody American Indian views on the environment and ecology.

new text begin (b) The educational materials must:

new text begin (1) incorporate diverse educational resources, including curriculum materials and lesson
plans, videos, documents, and project guides;

new text begin (2) be developed in collaboration with American Indian experts;
new text end

new text begin (3) represent a holistic and inclusive approach to environmental education;
new text end

new text begin (4) enhance students' understanding of environmental issues;
new text end

new text begin (5) encourage project-based and service learning; and
new text end

new text begin (6) respect the deep-rooted connections American Indian communities have with the
land.

new text begin (c) The commissioner of education must consult with American Indian leaders when
developing educational materials.

new text begin (d) This is a onetime appropriation.
