A bill for an act
relating to local government; authorizing a public finance program for local
candidates; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 471.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin (a) Any home rule charter, statutory city, town, or county may establish a public finance
program for local candidates funded with local tax dollars.

new text begin (b) Any home rule charter, statutory city, town, or county may spend money from the
public finance program to fund local candidates running for office in the jurisdiction of the
local government spending the money.

new text begin (c) In order to be eligible to participate in the program and receive funding under this
section, a local candidate must demonstrate that the candidate has support in the community,
as determined by the home rule charter, statutory city, town, or county.
