  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to data practices; requiring retention of law 
  1.3             enforcement background investigation data for a 
  1.4             minimum time period; amending Minnesota Statutes 1997 
  1.5             Supplement, section 626.87, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1997 Supplement, section 
  1.8   626.87, is amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 1a.  [RETENTION OF RECORDS.] A law enforcement agency 
  1.10  that conducts a background investigation as required under this 
  1.11  section shall retain the data obtained through the investigation 
  1.12  for a minimum of seven years, or a longer period of time 
  1.13  required in accordance with section 138.17.
