  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to employment; appropriating money for grants 
  1.3             to encourage girls and women to enter nontraditional 
  1.4             careers. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.7      $....... is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.8   commissioner of children, families, and learning for grants to 
  1.9   organizations for programs that encourage and assist girls and 
  1.10  women to enter nontraditional careers in the trades and in 
  1.11  manual and technical occupations.  The appropriation is 
  1.12  available until June 30, 1999.  
  1.13     To be eligible for a grant under this section, a program 
  1.14  must include outreach to girls and women through public and 
  1.15  private elementary, junior high, and high schools, appropriate 
  1.16  community organizations that work directly with girls and women, 
  1.17  or existing state and county employment and training programs.  
  1.18  The outreach must consist of general information concerning 
  1.19  opportunities for women in the trades, manual, and technical 
  1.20  occupations, including specific fields where worker shortage 
  1.21  exists, and specific information about training programs 
  1.22  offered.  The outreach must also include mentoring and hands-on 
  1.23  opportunities for girls to learn about nontraditional careers.  
  1.24  The outreach may include printed or recorded information, 
  1.25  presentations to girls and women, or ongoing contact with the 
  2.1   appropriate staff. 
  2.2      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.3      Section 1 is effective July 1, 1998.
