  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; increasing the penalties 
  1.3             for assaulting a peace officer; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 1998, section 609.2231, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.2231, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [PEACE OFFICERS.] Whoever assaults a peace 
  1.9   officer licensed under section 626.845, subdivision 1, when that 
  1.10  officer is effecting a lawful arrest or executing any other duty 
  1.11  imposed by law and inflicts demonstrable bodily harm is guilty 
  1.12  of a felony gross misdemeanor and may be sentenced to 
  1.13  imprisonment for not more than one year or to payment of a fine 
  1.14  of not more than $3,000, or both.  If the assault inflicts 
  1.15  demonstrable bodily harm, the person is guilty of a felony and 
  1.16  may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than two three 
  1.17  years or to payment of a fine of not more than $4,000 $6,000, or 
  1.18  both. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.20     Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to 
  1.21  crimes committed on or after that date.
