A bill for an act
relating to bridges; requiring commissioner of transportation to post signs on
certain trunk highway bridges; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota
Statutes, chapter 165.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

The commissioner of transportation shall post signs on
the approaches to trunk highway bridges based on the following categories:

(a) Red signs must be posted on the approaches to each trunk highway bridge that
has an average daily traffic count above 1,000 and a sufficiency rating at or below 50,
or is otherwise identified by the commissioner as a priority project, based on analysis
of the national bridge inventory condition codes, functional obsolescence, age, design,
history of maintenance and inspection, average daily traffic count, sufficiency rating, and
engineering judgments.

(b) Orange signs must be posted on the approaches to each trunk highway bridge
that does not meet the paragraph (a) criteria, but is classified as fracture critical, or has a
sufficiency rating at or below 80.

(c) Yellow signs must be posted on the approaches to each trunk highway bridge that
does not meet the paragraph (a) or (b) criteria, but is scheduled by the commissioner for
major repair, rehabilitation, or replacement.

The commissioner shall replace the signs on the
approaches to a bridge when the status of the bridge changes to a different category under
subdivision 1.
