  1.1                             A resolution 
  1.2             memorializing the United States Congress, the United 
  1.3             States Food and Drug Administration, and the United 
  1.4             States Department of Agriculture to promote the 
  1.5             judicious use of antimicrobials, supporting research 
  1.6             concerning antimicrobial resistance, and memorializing 
  1.7             leadership in other states to join in the effort. 
  1.8      
  1.9      WHEREAS antimicrobials are essential tools for human and 
  1.10  veterinary medicine; and 
  1.11     WHEREAS antimicrobial resistance is recognized as a problem 
  1.12  for both humans and animals; and 
  1.13     WHEREAS the key to addressing the problem begins with 
  1.14  prudent and judicious use of antimicrobials in both human and 
  1.15  animal medicine; and 
  1.16     WHEREAS more research is needed to clarify the 
  1.17  relationships between the use of antimicrobials in veterinary 
  1.18  medicine and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance problems 
  1.19  in humans, and NOW, THEREFORE, 
  1.20     BE IT RESOLVED by the legislature of the State of Minnesota 
  1.21  that it strongly urges the United States Food and Drug 
  1.22  Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture 
  1.23  to take steps to promote judicious use of antimicrobials and the 
  1.24  United States Congress to support research concerning 
  1.25  antimicrobial resistance. 
  1.26     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the State of 
  2.1   Minnesota strongly urges the governors and legislatures in other 
  2.2   states to promulgate this message. 
  2.3      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the 
  2.4   State of Minnesota is directed to prepare copies of this 
  2.5   memorial and transmit them to the President of the United States 
  2.6   and the Secretary of the United States Senate, the Speaker and 
  2.7   the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, and the 
  2.8   governors and legislative presiding officers of each of the 
  2.9   other states of the Union.
