  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to energy; providing for variance for 
  1.3             decorative gas lamp; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, 
  1.4             section 216C.19, subdivision 6.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 216C.19, 
  1.7   subdivision 6, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 6.  [VARIANCE FOR DECORATIVE GAS LAMP.] Beginning 
  1.9   April 20, 1977, no person shall use a decorative gas lamp in 
  1.10  Minnesota except as provided in this subdivision and in 
  1.11  subdivision subdivisions 5 and 7.  The commissioner shall, at 
  1.12  the request of a homeowner who is 65 years old or older, grant a 
  1.13  permanent variance allowing the a homeowner who received a 
  1.14  variance in 1997 to operate a decorative gas lamp or lamps at 
  1.15  the homeowner's principal place of residence.  The variance 
  1.16  shall be valid for the life of the recipient but shall be 
  1.17  renewed every four years.  The commissioner may shall not issue 
  1.18  a variance after August 1, 1992, except variances issued before 
  1.19  that date may be renewed under this subdivision to any other 
  1.20  person to use a decorative gas lamp or lamps.
