  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to retirement; extending specified extended 
  1.3             leave deadlines for certain teachers. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [EXTENDED LEAVE DEADLINE EXTENSION.] 
  1.6      (a) Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 354.094, a 
  1.7   person who was: 
  1.8      (1) born on January 26, 1944; 
  1.9      (2) initially hired by independent school district No. 13, 
  1.10  Columbia Heights, on August 30, 1967; and 
  1.11     (3) granted an extended leave of absence for the 1996-1997 
  1.12  school year; 
  1.13  is entitled to teacher retirement association coverage under 
  1.14  Minnesota Statutes, section 354.094, for the 1996-1997 school 
  1.15  year if all other conditions of that section are met beyond the 
  1.16  failure of the school district to timely submit payment. 
  1.17     (b) The person described in paragraph (a) shall pay the 
  1.18  applicable employee contribution under Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.19  section 354.42, subdivision 2. 
  1.20     (c) The school district shall pay the employer 
  1.21  contributions and additional employer contributions under 
  1.22  Minnesota Statutes, section 354.42, subdivisions 3 and 5, plus 
  1.23  8.5 percent interest, compounded annually, on the contributions 
  1.24  under this paragraph and the employee contributions under 
  2.1   paragraph (b). 
  2.2      (d) Payments for the amounts under paragraphs (b) and (c) 
  2.3   must be made to the teachers retirement association before June 
  2.4   30, 1998.  Interest must be calculated to the end of the month 
  2.5   in which payment is made. 
  2.6      Sec. 2.  [EXTENDED LEAVE DEADLINE EXTENSION.] 
  2.7      (a) Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 354.094, a 
  2.8   person who was: 
  2.9      (1) born on April 30, 1946; 
  2.10     (2) initially hired by independent school district No. 13, 
  2.11  Columbia Heights, on August 27, 1969; and 
  2.12     (3) first granted an extended leave of absence for the 
  2.13  1996-1997 school year; 
  2.14  is entitled to teacher retirement association coverage under 
  2.15  Minnesota Statutes, section 354.094, for the 1996-1997 school 
  2.16  year if all other conditions of that section are met beyond the 
  2.17  failure of the school district to timely submit payments. 
  2.18     (b) The person described in paragraph (a) shall pay the 
  2.19  applicable employee contribution under Minnesota Statutes, 
  2.20  section 354.42, subdivision 2. 
  2.21     (c) The school district shall pay the employer

  2.31     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.32     Sections 1 and 2 are effective the day following final 
  2.33  enactment.
