1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to education; requiring student participation 1.3 in a minimum number of physical education courses; 1.4 changing term from elective standards to local 1.5 standards; amending Minnesota Statutes 2003 1.6 Supplement, section 120B.022. 1.7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.8 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2003 Supplement, section 1.9 120B.022, is amended to read: 1.10 120B.022 [ELECTIVELOCAL STANDARDS.] 1.11 Subdivision 1. [ELECTIVELOCAL STANDARDS.] A district must 1.12 establish its own standards in the following subject areas: 1.13 (1) health and physical education; 1.14 (2) vocational and technical education; and 1.15 (3) world languages. 1.16 A school district must offer courses in allelectivelocal 1.17 standard subject areas. A public elementary or middle school 1.18 student must participate in a physical education course during 1.19 each quarter or semester of each school year. A public high 1.20 school student must participate in a physical education course 1.21 or in an interscholastic athletic program during at least one 1.22 quarter or semester of each school year. 1.23 Subd. 2. [LOCAL ASSESSMENTS.] A district must use a 1.24 locally selected assessment to determine if a student has 1.25 achievedan electivea local standard. 1.26 [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective for the 2.1 2004-2005 school year and later.
