  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; providing for other safe 
  1.3             house programs similar to the McGruff program; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 299A.28, 
  1.5             subdivision 5, and by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 299A.28, 
  1.8   subdivision 5, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 5.  [EXCLUSIVE SYMBOL.] The safe house symbol 
  1.10  provided by this section is the exclusive symbol for McGruff 
  1.11  safe houses in this state.  
  1.12     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 299A.28, is 
  1.13  amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.14     Subd. 7.  [NONAPPLICABILITY.] This section does not prevent 
  1.15  any other, similar safe house program primarily focusing on the 
  1.16  safety and protection of children, from being developed and 
  1.17  operated in the state if the program members are licensed child 
  1.18  care providers or foster care providers who have completed a 
  1.19  criminal background check satisfactory to the appropriate local 
  1.20  law enforcement agency.  The commissioner is not required to 
  1.21  perform the duties listed under subdivision 2 with respect to 
  1.22  these programs and is not accountable or liable for any act or 
  1.23  failure to act by a member of these programs.
