  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; appropriating money to reduce 
  1.3             tuition rates. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [MINNESOTA STATE COLLEGES AND 
  1.7   UNIVERSITIES.] $25,000,000 from the general fund is added to the 
  1.8   fiscal year 1997 appropriation in Laws 1995, chapter 212, 
  1.9   article 1, section 3, subdivision 1.  This money must be used to 
  1.10  reduce tuition rates by offsetting tuition revenue beginning in 
  1.11  the fall 1996 term. 
  1.12     Subd. 2.  [UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA.] $25,000,000 from the 
  1.13  general fund is added to the fiscal year 1997 appropriation in 
  1.14  Laws 1995, chapter 212, article 1, section 4, subdivision 2.  
  1.15  This money must be used to reduce tuition rates by offsetting 
  1.16  tuition revenue beginning in the fall 1996 term. 
  1.17     Subd. 3.  [HIGHER EDUCATION SERVICES OFFICE.] The higher 
  1.18  education services office shall project the surplus in the 1997 
  1.19  fiscal year appropriation for state grants in Laws 1995, chapter 
  1.20  212, article 1, section 2, subdivision 2, resulting from the 
  1.21  tuition reductions in subdivisions 1 and 2.  The projected 
  1.22  surplus shall be added to the 1997 fiscal year work study 
  1.23  appropriation in Laws 1995, chapter 212, article 1, section 2, 
  1.24  subdivision 4.
