  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to transportation; establishing demonstration 
  1.3             program to allow department of transportation to 
  1.4             administer certain metropolitan transit programs. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [TRANSIT ADMINISTRATION DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM.] 
  1.7      The department of transportation shall invite applications 
  1.8   from transit providers of small urban area service, rural area 
  1.9   service, and elderly and handicapped service, within the meaning 
  1.10  of Minnesota Statutes, section 174.22, located within the 
  1.11  metropolitan area, to participate in a demonstration program 
  1.12  involving administration of transit service until June 30, 2001, 
  1.13  by the department of transportation, office of transit.  The 
  1.14  department shall select no more than five providers in each 
  1.15  class of service specified in this section to participate in the 
  1.16  demonstration program.  The metropolitan council shall determine 
  1.17  the amount of financial assistance that the demonstration 
  1.18  program participants would receive under Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.19  section 473.388, subdivisions 4 and 5, if they received 
  1.20  assistance under the replacement service program, and transfer 
  1.21  this amount annually to the department of transportation to be 
  1.22  used as assistance to the demonstration program participants.
