  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to state government; legislative commission 
  1.3             on pensions and retirement; reducing the commission 
  1.4             membership from 12 to ten; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.5             1998, section 3.85, subdivision 3. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 3.85, 
  1.8   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [MEMBERSHIP.] The commission consists of six five 
  1.10  members of the senate appointed by the subcommittee on 
  1.11  committees of the committee on rules and administration and six 
  1.12  five members of the house of representatives appointed by the 
  1.13  speaker.  Members shall be appointed at the commencement of each 
  1.14  regular session of the legislature for a two-year term beginning 
  1.15  January 16 of the first year of the regular session.  Vacancies 
  1.16  that occur while the legislature is in session shall be filled 
  1.17  like regular appointments.  If the legislature is not in 
  1.18  session, senate vacancies shall be filled by the last 
  1.19  subcommittee on committees of the senate committee on rules and 
  1.20  administration or other appointing authority designated by the 
  1.21  senate rules, and house vacancies shall be filled by the last 
  1.22  speaker of the house, or if the speaker is not available, by the 
  1.23  last chair of the house rules committee. 
  1.24     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.25     Section 1 is effective on the day following final enactment.
