  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to elections; appropriating money for Kids 
  1.3             Voting Minnesota and participating school districts. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION; KIDS VOTING MINNESOTA.] 
  1.6      $290,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.7   secretary of state for grants for Kids Voting Minnesota to 
  1.8   improve voter turnout by encouraging children to go to the polls 
  1.9   on election day accompanied by their parents or guardians and 
  1.10  cast ballots on the same issues as adults.  Of this amount, 
  1.11  $50,000 is for a grant to Kids Voting Minnesota and the 
  1.12  remainder is for grants of $10,000 each to school districts 
  1.13  participating in the Kids Voting Minnesota program.  The funds 
  1.14  may be used to encourage partnerships among school districts, 
  1.15  state agencies, community organizations, and regional and 
  1.16  statewide organizations, as well as for polling place costs, 
  1.17  recruitment of school and community volunteers, and related 
  1.18  expenditures.  This appropriation is available until June 30, 
  1.19  2003, is a one-time appropriation, and is not added to the 
  1.20  secretary of state's budget base.
