  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; establishing the project extend 
  1.3             pilot program; appropriating money. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [PROJECT EXTEND PILOT PROGRAM.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [ESTABLISHMENT.] The project extend pilot 
  1.7   program is established in independent school district No. 624, 
  1.8   White Bear Lake, to increase student achievement, skills, and 
  1.9   self-confidence. 
  1.10     Subd. 2.  [APPLICATION; EVALUATION.] (a) To participate in 
  1.11  the pilot program, the district shall submit an application to 
  1.12  the commissioner of education in the form and manner prescribed 
  1.13  by the commissioner.  The application shall include a plan for 
  1.14  developing and implementing an extended program that provides 
  1.15  the following: 
  1.16     (1) more time for student learning; 
  1.17     (2) more varied resources to meet student learning styles; 
  1.18     (3) learning opportunities that typically are not available 
  1.19  in the regular student day; 
  1.20     (4) home, school, and community involvement, support, and 
  1.21  communication; and 
  1.22     (5) preprogram and postprogram student evaluations. 
  1.23     (b) The district shall evaluate the effectiveness of the 
  1.24  pilot program and report to the commissioner of education by 
  2.1   January 15, 1997. 
  2.2      Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  2.3      $750,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal 
  2.4   year 1996 to the commissioner of education for the purpose of 
  2.5   making a grant according to section 1 to independent school 
  2.6   district No. 624, White Bear Lake.
