  1.2             relating to education; providing grants under the 
  1.3             first-grade preparedness program; appropriating money. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATIONS.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND 
  1.7   LEARNING.] The sums indicated in this section are appropriated 
  1.8   from the general fund to the department of children, families, 
  1.9   and learning for the fiscal years designated. 
  1.10     Subd. 2.  [FIRST GRADE PREPAREDNESS.] 
  1.11       $.,...,...     .....     1998

  1.13     For grants for the first-grade preparedness program under 
  1.14  Minnesota Statutes, section 124.2613, for school sites that have 
  1.15  provided a full-day kindergarten option for kindergarten 
  1.16  students enrolled in fiscal years 1996 and 1997.  To be a 
  1.17  qualified site, licensed teachers must have taught the optional 
  1.18  full-day kindergarten classes.  A district that charged a fee 
  1.19  for students participating in an optional full-day program is 
  1.20  eligible to receive the grant to provide full-day kindergarten 
  1.21  for all students as required by Minnesota Statutes, section 
  1.22  124.2613, subdivision 4.  Districts with eligible sites must 
  1.23  apply to the commissioner of children, families, and learning 
  1.24  for a grant. 
  2.1      This appropriation is in addition to appropriations for the 
  2.2   program under Laws 1996, chapter 412, article 1, section 34, 
  2.3   subdivision 2, and must be used to expand the number of sites 
  2.4   providing first-grade preparedness.  The commissioner shall make 
  2.5   grants to eligible sites within the limits of the appropriation.
