  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; appropriating money for the 
  1.3             Minnesota academic excellence foundation. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATIONS.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.] The sums 
  1.7   indicated in this section are appropriated from the general fund 
  1.8   to the commissioner of education for the fiscal years designated.
  1.9      Subd. 2.  [MAEF.] For the Minnesota academic excellence 
  1.10  foundation according to Minnesota Statutes, section 121.612: 
  1.11       $525,000       .....     1996 
  1.12       $525,000       .....     1997 
  1.13  Up to $50,000 each year is contingent upon the match of $1 in 
  1.14  the previous year from private sources consisting of either 
  1.15  direct monetary contributions or in-kind contributions of 
  1.16  related goods or services, for each $1 of the appropriation.  
  1.17  The commissioner of education must certify receipt of the money 
  1.18  or documentation for the private matching funds or in-kind 
  1.19  contributions.  The unencumbered balance from the amount 
  1.20  actually appropriated from the contingent amount in 1996 does 
  1.21  not cancel but is available in 1997.  The amount carried forward 
  1.22  must not be used to establish a larger annual base appropriation 
  1.23  for later years. 
  1.24     Approximately $265,000 each year is for the foundation's 
  2.1   partners for quality initiative.
