  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; supporting the establishment of 
  1.3             an American Indian studies center; appropriating money.
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [LEGISLATIVE FINDINGS.] 
  1.6      The legislature recognizes the importance of understanding 
  1.7   and preserving the history of Minnesota.  The legislature 
  1.8   further recognizes the need to teach this history and to make 
  1.9   materials available for students at all levels to help develop 
  1.10  an appreciation of their roots and the roots of the state.  
  1.11  Additionally, the legislature recognizes the significant role of 
  1.12  the Indian tribes and people in the history of Minnesota.  
  1.13  Finally, the legislature recognizes that the future of the state 
  1.14  is dependent on understanding and appreciating the similarities 
  1.15  and the differences among the groups that comprise this state 
  1.16  and, to this end, emphasizes the importance of citizens learning 
  1.17  about the historical and current philosophy and culture of the 
  1.18  Objibwe, Lakota, and Cree. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.20     $175,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal 
  1.21  year 1998 to the board of trustees of the Minnesota state 
  1.22  colleges and universities for a center for American Indian 
  1.23  studies at Central Lakes Community and Technical College, to 
  1.24  house and display the Indian materials and literature that have 
  2.1   been donated to the college.  This appropriation is to acquire 
  2.2   supporting materials needed for teaching, compensate a part-time 
  2.3   curator and interns, renovate the facility, construct the 
  2.4   display, and develop appropriate accompanying educational 
  2.5   materials.  The appropriation is available for the biennium.
