1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to education; changing the date for taking 1.3 office for members of the school board of Northeast 1.4 Metropolitan intermediate school district No. 916; 1.5 changing the date of the organizational meeting; 1.6 amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 136D.72, 1.7 subdivisions 2 and 3. 1.8 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.9 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 136D.72, 1.10 subdivision 2, is amended to read: 1.11 Subd. 2. [TERMS.]The terms of the members of the first1.12school board shall, as nearly as possible, consist of one-third1.13of the members for one year, one-third of the members for two1.14years, and one-third of the members for three years. The1.15members of the first board shall determine by lot which length1.16of term each member of the first board shall be assigned.Terms 1.17 of office of the members of the board shall expire onJune 301.18 January 1. Thereafter the terms of office of board members 1.19 shall be forthreefour years commencing onJuly 1January 1 of 1.20 each year. If a vacancy occurs on the board, it shall be filled 1.21 by the appropriate school board. A person appointed to the 1.22 board shall qualify as a board member by filing with the chief 1.23 executive officer thereof a written certificate of appointment 1.24 from the appointing school board. 1.25 Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 136D.72, 1.26 subdivision 3, is amended to read: 2.1 Subd. 3. [ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING.]The first2.2meeting of the first school board shall be at such time mutually2.3agreed to by the members appointed by the participating school2.4districts. ThereafterThe school board shall meet inJuly2.5 January of each year when notified of such meeting by the chief 2.6 executive officer of the intermediate school district. Atsuch2.7firstthe organizational meeting, the officers of the 2.8 intermediate school district for the current year shall be 2.9 chosen and such other organizational business as may be 2.10 necessary shall be conducted. 2.11 Sec. 3. [TRANSITION.] 2.12 As a result of section 1, the terms of office of members 2.13 and officers of the board shall be lengthened to expire on the 2.14 January 1 following the June 30 on which they otherwise would 2.15 have expired. 2.16 Sec. 4. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 2.17 Sections 1 to 3 are effective the day following final 2.18 enactment.
