  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to occupations; requiring the department of 
  1.3             labor and industry to provide for licensure of 
  1.4             pipefitters on inactive status; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 1994, section 326.48, subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 326.48, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [LICENSE REQUIRED; RULES; TIME CREDIT.] No 
  1.10  person, firm, or corporation shall engage in or work at the 
  1.11  business of a contracting pipefitter or journeyman pipefitter 
  1.12  unless licensed to do so by the department of labor and 
  1.13  industry.  No license shall be required for repairs on existing 
  1.14  installations.  A contracting pipefitter may also work as a 
  1.15  journeyman pipefitter.  
  1.16     No person, firm, or corporation shall engage in the 
  1.17  business of installing high pressure piping, nor install high 
  1.18  pressure piping in connection with the dealing in and selling of 
  1.19  high pressure pipe material and supplies, unless, at all times, 
  1.20  a licensed pipefitter, who shall be responsible for proper 
  1.21  installation, is in charge of the high pressure pipefitting work 
  1.22  of the person, firm, or corporation. 
  1.23     The department of labor and industry shall prescribe rules, 
  1.24  not inconsistent herewith, for the examination and licensing of 
  1.25  pipefitters and for issuance of permits for the installation of 
  2.1   high pressure piping.  The rules must provide for the licensure 
  2.2   of pipefitters on inactive status. 
  2.3      An employee performing the duties of inspector for the 
  2.4   department of labor and industry in regulating pipefitting shall 
  2.5   not receive time credit for the inspection duties when making an 
  2.6   application for a license required by this section.
