  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to corrections; authorizing state 
  1.3             correctional officers to carry firearms in the 
  1.4             performance of official duties when authorized by the 
  1.5             commissioner of corrections; proposing coding for new 
  1.6             law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 243. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [243.27] [CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS; AUTHORITY TO 
  1.9   CARRY FIREARMS.] 
  1.10     The commissioner may authorize a state correctional officer 
  1.11  who is not assigned to a state correctional facility to carry a 
  1.12  firearm when the commissioner deems it necessary to the 
  1.13  discharge of the officer's official duties, including but not 
  1.14  limited to the transporting of inmates between correctional 
  1.15  facilities or for the purpose of obtaining medical care, and the 
  1.16  apprehension of parole or supervised release violators.  This 
  1.17  authority is in addition to the authority of correctional 
  1.18  officers to carry pistols that is granted by section 624.714.  
  1.19  The commissioner shall adopt policies that ensure that 
  1.20  correctional officers who carry firearms in the course of 
  1.21  official duties have been trained in the safe use of firearms 
  1.22  and in the lawful use of deadly force.
