  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; dedicating a department of 
  1.3             children, families, and learning staff position to 
  1.4             school media programs; studying school media centers; 
  1.5             appropriating money. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATIONS; SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER STUDY; 
  1.8   STAFF POSITION.] 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND 
  1.10  LEARNING.] The sums indicated in this section are appropriated 
  1.11  from the general fund for the fiscal years designated. 
  1.12     Subd. 2.  [STAFF POSITION DEDICATED.] For designating a 
  1.13  staff position charged with providing state-level leadership for 
  1.14  school media programs: 
  1.15       $   90,000     .....     2002 
  1.16       $   90,000     .....     2003 
  1.17     Subd. 3.  [SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER STUDY.] For conducting a 
  1.18  study of school media centers: 
  1.19       $  100,000     .....     2002 
  1.20     The study must: 
  1.21     (1) make available comprehensive data about school media 
  1.22  center staffing, facilities, collections, and technology; 
  1.23     (2) identify elements of school media programs that 
  1.24  contribute to students' educational achievement; and 
  1.25     (3) recommend best practices for school media programs. 
  2.1      [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective July 1, 2001.
