1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to crime prevention; prohibiting children 1.3 under the age of 17 from renting or purchasing certain 1.4 video games; providing penalties; proposing coding for 1.5 new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 609. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. [609.6855] [RESTRICTED VIDEO GAMES; 1.8 PROHIBITIONS.] 1.9 Subdivision 1. [DEFINITION.] As used in this section, 1.10 "restricted video game" means a video game rated AO or M by the 1.11 entertainment software rating board. 1.12 Subd. 2. [PROHIBITED ACTS; PENALTY.] A person under the 1.13 age of 17 who knowingly rents or purchases a restricted video 1.14 game is guilty of a petty misdemeanor and is subject to a fine 1.15 of not more than $25. 1.16 Subd. 3. [POSTED SIGN REQUIRED.] A person or entity 1.17 engaged in the retail business of selling or renting video games 1.18 from a location or structure with access to the public shall 1.19 post a sign in a location that is clearly visible to consumers. 1.20 The sign must display the following language: "It is against 1.21 the law for a person under 17 to rent or purchase a video game 1.22 rated AO or M. Violators may be subject to a $25 penalty."
