  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to state government; authorizing each member 
  1.3             of the legislature to directly hire one staff person; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 3.07. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 3.07, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      3.07 [ADDITIONAL EMPLOYEES.] 
  1.9      Each house, after its organization, may appoint and at 
  1.10  pleasure remove the employees provided for by its permanent 
  1.11  rules or recommended by its committee on rules.  Each member of 
  1.12  the legislature must be allowed to directly hire and employ one 
  1.13  staff person.  The hiring of staff by individual members does 
  1.14  not increase the total number of staff persons authorized under 
  1.15  the rules of each house.  All officers and employees shall 
  1.16  receive the compensation provided by the permanent rules of the 
  1.17  electing or appointing body or recommended by its committee on 
  1.18  rules.  Unless otherwise expressly provided by law, no officer 
  1.19  or employee shall receive any other compensation for services.
