1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 proposing an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, 1.3 article IV, section 4; providing four-year terms for 1.4 representatives and six-year terms for senators. 1.5 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.6 Section 1. [CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.] 1.7 An amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, article IV, 1.8 section 4, is proposed to the people. If the amendment is 1.9 adopted, the section will read: 1.10 Sec. 4. Representatives shall be chosen for a term oftwo1.11 four years, except to fill a vacancy.and senators shall be 1.12 chosen for a term offoursix years, except to fill a vacancy 1.13 and except there shall be an entire new election of all the 1.14 representatives and senators at the first electionof1.15representativesafter each new legislative apportionment 1.16 provided for in this article. The governor shall call elections 1.17 to fill vacancies in either house of the legislature. 1.18 Sec. 2. [SUBMISSION TO PEOPLE.] 1.19 The proposed amendment must be submitted to the people at 1.20 the 1998 general election. The question submitted shall be: 1.21 "Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide 1.22 four-year terms for representatives and six-year terms for 1.23 senators? 1.24 Yes ....... 1.25 No ........" 2.1 If the amendment is adopted, it is effective for members 2.2 elected at the 2002 general election and thereafter.
