A bill for an act
relating to animals; dogs and cats; establishing liability for attacks by cats;
amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 347.22.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 347.22, is amended to read:


347.22 DAMAGES, OWNER LIABLE.

(a) If a dog an animal, without provocation, attacks or injures any person who is
acting peaceably in any place where the person may lawfully be, the owner of the dog
animal is liable in damages to the person so attacked or injured to the full amount of
the injury sustained. The term "owner" includes any person harboring or keeping a dog
the animal but the owner shall be primarily liable. The term "dog" includes both male
and female of the canine species.

(b) For purposes of this section, "animal" means a dog, wholly or in part of the
species Canis familiaris, or a cat, wholly or in part of the species Felis domesticus, and
includes both male and female of each species.
