  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; changing the definition of 
  1.3             satisfactory progress; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.4             1994, section 136A.101, subdivision 10. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 136A.101, 
  1.7   subdivision 10, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 10.  "Satisfactory academic progress" means that: 
  1.9      (1) at the end of a student's first and second academic 
  1.10  year of attendance at an institution:, 
  1.11     (1) the student has at least a cumulative grade point 
  1.12  average of C or its equivalent, or academic standing consistent 
  1.13  with its the institution's graduation requirements; or and 
  1.14     (2) The student's failure to have at least a cumulative 
  1.15  grade point average of C or its equivalent, or academic standing 
  1.16  consistent with its graduation requirements, was caused by (a) 
  1.17  the death of a relative of the student; (b) an injury or illness 
  1.18  of the student; or (c) other special circumstances.  during the 
  1.19  first term of the third and fourth academic year of attendance, 
  1.20  (i) the student has a cumulative grade point average greater 
  1.21  than C or its equivalent, (ii) the student's advisor certifies 
  1.22  that the student has reviewed the general education requirements 
  1.23  necessary for graduation and is making satisfactory progress 
  1.24  toward completing them, and (iii) the student's advisor 
  1.25  certifies that the student has chosen a major and reviewed the 
  2.1   requirements necessary for completion of the major.
