  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to health; establishing an American Indian 
  1.3             diabetes prevention advisory task force; appropriating 
  1.4             money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [AMERICAN INDIAN DIABETES PREVENTION ADVISORY 
  1.7   TASK FORCE.] 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [ESTABLISHMENT.] The commissioner of health 
  1.9   shall convene an American Indian diabetes prevention advisory 
  1.10  task force.  The task force must include representatives from 
  1.11  the American Indian tribes located in the state and urban 
  1.12  American Indian representatives. 
  1.13     Subd. 2.  [DUTIES.] The task force shall advise the 
  1.14  commissioner on the adaptation of curricula and the 
  1.15  dissemination of information designed to reduce the risk factors 
  1.16  associated with diabetes among American Indian school children 
  1.17  in grades 1 through 4.  The curricula and information must be 
  1.18  sensitive to traditional American Indian values and culture and 
  1.19  must encourage full participation by the American Indian 
  1.20  community. 
  1.21     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.22     (a) $90,000 is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 
  1.23  30, 1998, from the general fund to the commissioner of health 
  1.24  for a comprehensive school-based intervention program designed 
  1.25  to reduce the risk factors associated with diabetes among 
  2.1   American Indian school children in grades 1 through 4. 
  2.2      (b) $90,000 is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 
  2.3   30, 1999, from the general fund to the commissioner of health 
  2.4   for the program described in paragraph (a).  The appropriation 
  2.5   is available only if matched by $1 of nonstate money for each $1 
  2.6   of the appropriation.
