  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; general state employees 
  1.3             retirement plan of the Minnesota state retirement 
  1.4             system; authorizing a purchase of prior service credit 
  1.5             for part-time employment. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [GENERAL STATE EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT PLAN; 
  1.8   SERVICE CREDIT PURCHASE AUTHORIZED.] 
  1.9      (a) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, 
  1.10  an eligible person described in paragraph (b) is authorized to 
  1.11  purchase allowable service credit from the general state 
  1.12  employees retirement plan of the Minnesota state retirement 
  1.13  system for the period described in paragraph (c) by making the 
  1.14  prior service credit purchase payment required under Minnesota 
  1.15  Statutes, section 356.55. 
  1.16     (b) An eligible person is a person who: 
  1.17     (1) is a current employee of the Minnesota department of 
  1.18  corrections and is a current member of the general state 
  1.19  employees retirement plan of the Minnesota state retirement 
  1.20  system; 
  1.21     (2) was born on April 3, 1957; 
  1.22     (3) was employed on a part-time basis by the Minnesota 
  1.23  department of transportation on September 11, 1984; and 
  1.24     (4) first became a member of the general state employees 
  1.25  retirement plan of the Minnesota state retirement system on 
  2.1   September 26, 1989. 
  2.2      (c) The allowable service credit purchase period is two 
  2.3   years and 11 months. 
  2.4      (d) The eligible person must provide all relevant 
  2.5   documentation of the applicability of the requirements set forth 
  2.6   in paragraph (b) and any other applicable information that the 
  2.7   executive director of the Minnesota state retirement system may 
  2.8   request. 
  2.9      (e) Allowable service credit for the purchase period must 
  2.10  be granted by the general state employees retirement plan to the 
  2.11  eligible person upon receipt of the prior service credit 
  2.12  purchase payment amount. 
  2.13     (f) Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55, 
  2.14  subdivision 5, the Minnesota department of transportation is not 
  2.15  permitted to pay any portion of the service credit purchase 
  2.16  payment amount. 
  2.17     (g) The prior service credit purchase authority expires on 
  2.18  July 1, 2002, or on the date of the termination of active state 
  2.19  service by the eligible person, whichever occurs earlier. 
  2.20     Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.21     Section 1 is effective on the day following final enactment.
