  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; directing the commissioner of 
  1.3             education to conduct a needs assessment for a 
  1.4             statewide program that serves mathematically talented 
  1.5             junior and senior high school students; appropriating 
  1.6             money. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [TALENTED STUDENT MATH PROGRAM NEEDS 
  1.9   ASSESSMENT.] 
  1.10     The commissioner of education shall conduct a needs 
  1.11  assessment to determine whether the Mankato State University 
  1.12  talented youth project, or a similar program, should be 
  1.13  available throughout the state to serve mathematically talented 
  1.14  junior and senior high school students.  The commissioner shall 
  1.15  report the findings to the education committees of the 
  1.16  legislature by February 1, 1996. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.18     $60,000 is appropriated from the general fund to Mankato 
  1.19  State University to fund the university's talented youth 
  1.20  project; $30,000 to be available for the fiscal year ending June 
  1.21  30, 1996, and $30,000 to be available for the fiscal year ending 
  1.22  June 30, 1997. 
  1.23     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
