  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to motor vehicles; providing for redesigned 
  1.3             license plates to be issued in 2001 for passenger 
  1.4             automobiles; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 
  1.5             168.12, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 168.12, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 1a.  [NEW MILLENNIUM PLATE DESIGN.] For calendar year 
  1.10  2001, the commissioner of public safety shall issue new license 
  1.11  plates for all passenger automobiles as defined in section 
  1.12  168.011, subdivision 7.  The commissioner shall redesign these 
  1.13  new plates to ensure that the plates are easily distinguishable 
  1.14  from previous plates, and that all plates issued, including 
  1.15  special license plates, are as uniform as practicable for the 
  1.16  placement, design, and size of figures, emblems, and symbols.  
  1.17  The new design must commemorate Minnesota and the new 
  1.18  millennium.  For calendar years after 2001, the plates must be 
  1.19  issued according to subdivision 1. 
  1.20     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.21     $....... is appropriated from the highway user tax 
  1.22  distribution fund to the commissioner of public safety for the 
  1.23  fiscal biennium ending June 30, 2001, for the purposes of 
  1.24  section 1.
