  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to local government; requiring two-year terms 
  1.3             of office for members of the governing body of certain 
  1.4             cities; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes, chapter 410. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [410.016] [CITY COUNCIL TERMS.] 
  1.8      Notwithstanding any provision of law or home rule charter 
  1.9   to the contrary, in cities of the first class with a population 
  1.10  of 100,000 or more according to the most recent federal 
  1.11  decennial census, each member of the governing body of the city 
  1.12  shall be elected to a term of office of two years.  This section 
  1.13  applies to persons elected in the 1997 municipal election and 
  1.14  thereafter.
