  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; requiring Veterans' Day to be a 
  1.3             school holiday; amending Minnesota Statutes 2002, 
  1.4             section 120A.42. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 120A.42, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      120A.42 [CONDUCT OF SCHOOL ON CERTAIN HOLIDAYS.] 
  1.9      The governing body of any district may contract with any of 
  1.10  the teachers of the district for the conduct of schools, and may 
  1.11  conduct schools, on either, or any, of the following holidays, 
  1.12  provided that a clause to this effect is inserted in the 
  1.13  teacher's contract:  Martin Luther King's birthday, Lincoln's 
  1.14  and Washington's birthdays, and Columbus Day and Veterans' Day.  
  1.15  On Martin Luther King's birthday, Washington's birthday, and 
  1.16  Lincoln's birthday, and Veterans' Day at least one hour of the 
  1.17  school program must be devoted to a patriotic observance of the 
  1.18  day. 
  1.19     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective the day 
  1.20  following final enactment and applies to the 2003-2004 school 
  1.21  year and later.
