  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; requiring the commissioner 
  1.3             to report on state patrol recruit training; 
  1.4             appropriating money for a state patrol recruit 
  1.5             training academy. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [REPORT.] 
  1.8      On or before February 15, 2002, the commissioner shall 
  1.9   present to the committees having jurisdiction over 
  1.10  transportation policy and finance in the house of 
  1.11  representatives and the senate an evaluation of the efficiency 
  1.12  and cost-effectiveness of the present recruit training program, 
  1.13  and a comparison of the effectiveness and potential cost-savings 
  1.14  of alternative training formats with the current academy format. 
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.16     $1,212,000 in fiscal year 2002 and $3,082,000 in fiscal 
  1.17  year 2003 is appropriated from the trunk highway fund to the 
  1.18  commissioner of public safety to fund up to 65 new patrol 
  1.19  positions and the recruit training academy.  The commissioner 
  1.20  must hold a training academy in July 2001 and a training academy 
  1.21  in January 2003 with this appropriation.
