  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; permitting school boards to 
  1.3             permanently expel pupils who commit violent acts in 
  1.4             school; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 
  1.5             127.27, subdivision 5.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 127.27, 
  1.8   subdivision 5, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 5.  "Expulsion" means an action taken by a school 
  1.10  board to prohibit an enrolled pupil from further attendance for 
  1.11  a specified period that shall.  The period must not extend 
  1.12  beyond an amount of time equal to one school year from the date 
  1.13  a pupil is expelled, except in the case of a pupil committing an 
  1.14  act of violence in school.  A school board may permanently expel 
  1.15  a pupil committing an act of violence in school.
