A bill for an act
relating to public safety; requiring the reporting of stolen or lost firearms; imposing
criminal penalties; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter
624.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

A person who fails to report a
stolen or lost firearm within 14 days of discovery of the theft or loss may be punished as
provided in subdivision 2.

(a) A person who violates this section is guilty of a petty misdemeanor.

(b) A person who violates this section a second time is guilty of a misdemeanor.

(c) A person who violates this section a third or subsequent time is guilty of a gross
misdemeanor.

A person shall report a stolen or lost firearm to the chief of
police of an organized full-time police department of the municipality where the person
resides or to the county sheriff if there is no local chief of police where the person resides.

A chief of police or sheriff shall
report a stolen or lost firearm to the commissioner of public safety within seven days of
receiving notification of the theft or loss under this section.

This section is effective August 1, 2018, and applies to acts
committed on or after that date.
