A bill for an act
relating to public safety; providing bonus payments to local correctional officers
and 911 dispatchers; appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin APPROPRIATION; BONUS PAYMENTS TO LOCAL CORRECTIONAL
OFFICERS AND 911 DISPATCHERS.

new text begin (a) As used in this section, "public safety employee" includes local correctional officers
and 911 dispatchers.

new text begin (b) $....... in fiscal year 2023 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner
of public safety to distribute a onetime bonus payment to each public safety employee
employed in that capacity as of July 1, 2022. The bonus payment must be $1,500 for
employees under the age of 50 as of July 1, 2022, and $5,000 for employees aged 55 or
over as of July 1, 2022. For an employee aged 50 to 54 as of July 1, 2022, the bonus payment
is $1,500. However, the employee must be paid an additional $3,500 bonus upon reaching
55 years of age if the person is still employed as a public safety employee or upon working
an additional two years as a public safety employee, whichever occurs first. The department
may use up to 3.5 percent of this appropriation for administrative expenses related to making
the payments. This appropriation is available until expended.
