A bill for an act
relating to higher education; requiring a University of Minnesota faculty member
to serve on the Board of Regents; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota
Statutes, chapter 137.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

In electing members of the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota pursuant
to the Minnesota Constitution, article XIII, section 3, and Territorial Laws 1851, chapter 3,
section 5, one member of the Board of Regents must be a person who at the time of election
to the board is a tenured faculty member of the university. This person shall represent the
state at large. Upon expiration of the term or in the event of a vacancy in the office, the
position shall be filled by a person having the same qualifications.

This section is effective January 1, 2019, and applies to one of
the at-large regent positions to be elected in 2019 and thereafter.

The Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota is requested to amend its policies
to permit a regent elected under Minnesota Statutes, section 137.0231, to serve as a
compensated university employee.
