  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to traffic regulations; authorizing 
  1.3             Centerville and Lino Lakes to prescribe a speed limit 
  1.4             of 25 miles per hour in school zones. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [CENTERVILLE AND LINO LAKES; SPEED LIMITS IN 
  1.7   SCHOOL ZONES.] 
  1.8      Notwithstanding any other law, the cities of Centerville 
  1.9   and Lino Lakes may prescribe a speed limit of 25 miles per hour 
  1.10  in a school zone, as defined in Minnesota Statutes, section 
  1.11  169.14, subdivision 5a, located on any street or highway within 
  1.12  the city.  The cities may erect on any street or highway within 
  1.13  the city signs designating the speed limit and indicating the 
  1.14  beginning and end of the school zone, and a school zone speed 
  1.15  limit prescribed under this section is effective on the erection 
  1.16  of the signs.  A school zone speed limit prescribed under this 
  1.17  section is in effect when children are present or going to or 
  1.18  leaving school during opening or closing hours or during school 
  1.19  recess periods.  Any speed in excess of a speed limit prescribed 
  1.20  under this section is unlawful.  This section does not limit the 
  1.21  authority of Centerville and Lino Lakes under Minnesota 
  1.22  Statutes, section 169.14, subdivision 5a. 
  1.23     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 645.023, 
  1.25  subdivision 1, clause (a), section 1 is effective without local 
  2.1   approval on August 1, 2000.
