  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; creating a crime for 
  1.3             driving away from a gas pump without paying; requiring 
  1.4             driver's license suspension for subsequent 
  1.5             convictions; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.6             Statutes, chapter 609. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [609.522] [GAS THEFT.] 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [CRIME.] A person who obtains gasoline from 
  1.10  a retail establishment and drives away without paying for the 
  1.11  gasoline is guilty of a crime and shall be punished as provided 
  1.12  in section 609.52, subdivision 3. 
  1.13     Subd. 2.  [LOSS OF DRIVER'S LICENSE.] In addition to the 
  1.14  penalties provided in subdivision 1, the commissioner of public 
  1.15  safety shall suspend for a period of three months the driver's 
  1.16  license or operating privileges of anyone convicted of a second 
  1.17  violation of this section and shall suspend for a period of six 
  1.18  months the driver's license or operating privileges of anyone 
  1.19  convicted of a third or subsequent violation. 
  1.20     Subd. 3.  [NOTICE.] Upon receipt of an accurate record of 
  1.21  conviction, the commissioner of public safety shall immediately 
  1.22  notify the licensee of the suspension, in writing, by mailing a 
  1.23  notice addressed to the licensee at the licensee's last known 
  1.24  address. 
  1.25     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.26     Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to 
  2.1   offenses occurring on or after that date.
