  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; modifying declining pupil unit 
  1.3             aid for fiscal year 1998; amending Laws 1997, First 
  1.4             Special Session chapter 4, article 4, section 34.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  1.7   article 4, section 34, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Sec. 34.  [FISCAL YEAR 1998 DECLINING PUPIL UNIT AID.] 
  1.9      (a) For fiscal year 1998 only, a school district with one 
  1.10  or more school buildings closed during the 1996-1997 school year 
  1.11  due to flooding is eligible for declining pupil unit aid equal 
  1.12  to the greater of zero or the product of the general education 
  1.13  formula allowance for fiscal year 1998 times the difference 
  1.14  between the district's actual pupil units for the 1996-1997 
  1.15  school year and the district's actual pupil units for the 
  1.16  1997-1998 school year. 
  1.17     (b) For fiscal year 1998 only, a school district that lost 
  1.18  enrollment because of the summer storms in 1997 is eligible for 
  1.19  declining pupil unit aid equal to the greater of zero or other 
  1.20  product of the general education formula allowance for fiscal 
  1.21  year 1998 times the difference between the district's actual 
  1.22  pupil units for the 1996-1997 school year and the district's 
  1.23  pupil units for the 1997-1998 school year. 
  1.24     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.25     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
