1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to education; providing for the increase of 1.3 women graduates in nontraditional occupations; 1.4 appropriating money for training for low-income 1.5 students. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. [WOMEN GRADUATES.] 1.8 The board of trustees of the Minnesota state colleges and 1.9 universities shall establish and implement a goal of 1.10 substantially increasing the number of women graduates in 1.11 nontraditional trade, manual, and technical occupations by the 1.12 year 2000. 1.13 Sec. 2. [TRAINING FOR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS.] 1.14 $....... is appropriated in fiscal year 1999 from the 1.15 general fund to the board of trustees of the Minnesota state 1.16 colleges and universities for grants to technical colleges to 1.17 develop programs and provide financial aid to train low-income 1.18 individuals to work in industries that need skilled employees in 1.19 jobs that pay above $10 an hour. The programs must be able to 1.20 be completed while the student is working 20 to 40 hours a week 1.21 and must include allowances for transportation, child care, and 1.22 other family needs. 1.23 Sec. 3. [WORK STUDY PROGRAMS.] 1.24 $....... is appropriated in fiscal year 1999 from the 1.25 general fund to the board of trustees of the Minnesota state 2.1 colleges and universities for grants to community colleges, 2.2 state universities, and technical colleges to develop work study 2.3 programs that cover low-income students' living expenses as the 2.4 students complete a one- to four-year degree program.
